Essential Duties and Responsibilities of the CFO:

Directs financial activities for my client company and its subsidiaries by performing the following duties:

  • Oversee the activities of the Accounting Department for the accurate and timely processing of financial management including, but not limited to, daily cash management, bank reconciliations, internal and external monthly financial statements, coordinating the month-end and year-end closing process and annual audits and annual budgets.
  • Maintain a documented system of accounting policies and procedures
  • Must be willing and able to assist accounting staff in day to day accounting tasks when needed
  • Ensure timely and accurate monthly, quarterly and year-end close process
  • Review inter-company billings to parent company, including the follow up of payment
  • Prepare reports to summarize and forecast company business activity and financial position in areas of income, expenses, and earnings based on past, present, and expected operations
  • Responsible for daily cash management operations, short-term cash forecasting and all aspects related to the management of operating cash flow.
  • Provides sales/expense analyses, identifying potential problem areas and opportunities for improved profitability relative to forecasts.
  •  Prepares consolidated financial statements as well as individualized financial
    statements for business units and present to upper management/ownership
  • Oversee and manage all general ledger activity, investigating irregularities Manage assigned members of the accounting department, expand the team, and guide them through operational changes.
  • Directly supervises employees and carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring and training employees; planning, assigning and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable government finance regulations, including filing and/or maintaining of required forms, payroll taxes and deposits, and income taxes. Prepare reports required by regulatory agencies.
  • Advise management about insurance coverage for protection against property losses and potential liabilities. Direct determination of depreciation rates to apply to capital assets.
  • Act as Network administrator, establishing and maintain systems and controls, which verify the integrity of all systems, processes and data.
  • Oversee and manage any outsourced functions (e.g., payroll, sales-tax, Federal and State Taxes)

Job Knowledge, Skills and Abilities of the CFO:

  • Exceptional working knowledge of GAAP
  • 5-10 years experience in all aspects of accounting.
  • Proven supervisory experience.
  • Strong organizational and management skills.
  • Ability to see the big picture while focusing on the process and procedures necessary to produce deliverables.
  • Job Costing
  • Meticulous attention to detail and accuracy in work product.
  • Flexibility and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment.
  • Accounting degree and public accounting experience preferred.

Education and Experience Required for the CFO:

With Q1 behind us lets jump right into the update for Houston. I am sure everyone is curious about the oil & gas prices and what impact they are having  on the job market in Houston. I have been in the recruiting industry for almost 14 years and have already been through 2 full blown recessions. 2015 has been an interesting year so far.  I feel like our local economy has taken a hit from the drop of Oil & Gas, but it’s not as severe (knock on wood) as I thought it would be. Some might beg to differ but, let me explain!

Obviously, Houston has been impacted by the depressed prices. Most Exploration & Production companies are not hiring at all. Some are even laying off, but downstream and midstream companies are still hiring. They are actually benefiting from the drop in price. Not to mention the back log of construction projects that are still on the books. We are also seeing increased demand from consumer products based companies (retail, restaurant, healthcare). Houston has gained nearly 570,000 residents in the past 5 years!

Just imagine the resources they will need from housing, healthcare to groceries and cars!

So, is the job market as good as it was last year? The simple answer is no, but there are still a lot of opportunities out there in several other industries outside of “oil & gas”.

The corporate accounting manager will effectively manage all general accounting activities for multiple corporate controlled entities under Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).  The Corporate Accounting Manager is responsible for managing the month-end close process and supervising the corporate accounting staff to ensure timely and accurate financial reporting and analysis.  The position will report to the Assistant Controller and be called on to interact with executive management as needed.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Maintain policies, procedures and internal controls required to ensure financial statements of corporate companies are prepared timely and in accordance with GAAP.

  • Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; participating in professional societies.

Industry News and Updates

This has been an interesting start to the 4th quarter of the year. I can’t say that we are super busy on the direct hire side of our business, but we have been very steady. Although year to date, the CFS Houston Team has become one of the top CFS offices for growth!  The demand for contract workers is very high. We are seeing this locally in Houston and nationally (40 offices nationwide).  I wonder how much of an impact the coming election is having on the types of hires companies are making (temporary vs. permanent) and if we will see the flood gates open after we receive the election results. I guess we will have to wait and see.

I continue to be optimistic about our local economy. Most of the news we see every day about Houston is very positive. We were just recently name the number one city in the US for Manufacturing by Forbes. Just simply drive around town and there seem to be buildings going up every where (especially on the west side of town). Construction is always the last industry to come out of a recession, so I am sure this is just the beginning of what’s to come. According to the GHP Houston added almost 90, 000 jobs by the end of August 2012. We are experiencing one of the fastest growth rates in the nation. Again, very positive news. It is great to live in such a wonderful and prosperous city. Oh, and by the way GO TEXANS! They are having an amazing year and I am certain making a positive impact on our local economy :-). Our client is growing and looking to add two Accounting Managers to their team. No oil & gas experience necessary. We are looking for Accounting Managers with heavy corporate accounting and/ or SEC reporting experience. Some of the responsibilities will include: preparing statements of cash flow in multi-company environment and create and communicating the monthly, quarterly and annual close calendar. They will also monitor and drive the close process of subsidiary entities and sub-ledgers to meet calendar close requirements and prepare those entries necessary for the consolidation, which may include consolidating elimination entries, entries to record noncontrollling interests and journals required for complex transactions. Our P/E owned client is growing. They are looking for either an Accounting Manager or Assistant controller to join their team. They have almost double in size this year alone and are aggressively going after additional acquisitions.  The A.C. will supervise a staff of 5 staff / senior accountants. Other responsibilities include:

  • Supervise day to day accounting functions
  • Manage monthly close process
  • Assist the Controller with consolidating monthly, quarterly and annual report
  • Assist in managing the annual audit process
  • Continue Great Plains implementation

Requirements

  • Accounting degree, CPA highly preferred
  • Great Plains, Microsoft Dynamics experience required
  • FRX reporting experience preferred
  • Supervisory experience

Overview: Responsible for controlling excellence as it pertains to internal and external reporting, adherence to corporate policies and procedures, controlling of expense spending, and management of all cash collections and payments. Additional responsibilities include all company/department support, data quality evaluation/validation, cost center support and supervision of the accounts payable accounts receivable and general ledger departments.

Responsibilities: 1. Provide accurate and timely reports to management (internal reporting), as required. 2. Provide accurate and timely reporting of company data to Corporate office (external reporting) as required. 3. Analyze cost center reports, review findings with appropriate manager/management each month. 4. Work with all departments to improve/maintain data quality. 5. Develop budget and forecast consolidations as required. 6. Perform monthly closing of the general ledger and subsystems in an accurate and timely manner. 7. Assist and manage the process of customer collections, including adherence to policies, collection goals, customer collection logs, and proper cash postings. 8. Reconcile or manage the process for all general ledger accounts. 9. Adherence to all policies and procedures as it pertains to the disbursement of company cash. 10. Coordination and general support of Company audits of both an internal and external nature. 11. Act as a resource to management regarding all accounting issues, reporting and analysis. 13. Perform other directly related appropriate duties as assigned.

Requirements

1. 2 – 5 years professional experience in finance accounting preferably in a manufacturing environment. 2. Bachelor’s degree in accounting required. 3. Experience with ERP software required (SAP)

Financial / Business Analyst – Houston, Texas – dcd@fittsroberts.com

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare and analyze monthly consolidating financial information from consolidation software
  • Communicate with reporting entities to ensure consistency of data
  • Publish final reports
  • Analyze financial and business information for variance analysis from plan and forecast
  • Financial planning process
    • Deliverables – Annual Budget, Quarterly Forecasts, Three Plan
    • Process development and communication with subs in compliance with HQ requirements
    • Controlling data points for consistency and accuracy
    • Development of related financial modeling tools – including cash flow and balance sheet forecast
    • Publishing final outputs
    • Develops implements and monitors cross divisional financial planning and analysis policies and controls to improve budgeting, financial forecasting and cost controls and timeliness and quality of financial reporting.
    • Reviews proposals for major capital expenditures and contracts to insure conformity with corporate plans.  Advises on their economic justification.
    • Provides input for the arrangement and administration of lines of credit.  Assists in maintaining necessary relationships with banks & other financial institutions.  Responsible for the proper signature and endorsement of corporate checks, notes and other authorized financial documents.
    • Assists the CFO in the evaluation of potential acquisitions and other business relationships being considered by the corporation.
    • Directs the development and maintenance of the department expenses and budgets.
    • Undertakes special studies requested by the CFO and other officers and performs other duties as assigned or required.

Our client, a 500 million dollar Oil Field Services company, is currently looking to add a Senior Accountant to their team. This person would be slated for the Accounting Manger role within a year!!! The company’s goal is to reach annual revenues of 1 Billion!

Senior Accountant

  • Help lead staff of 5.
  • Ownership of GL and Consolidated Financial Statements.
  • Assist with coordinating Audit.
  • Maintain Fixed Asset Inventory system.
  • DSO and Cash Flow forecasting.
  • Ad Hoc Projects as assigned.
  • Assist in developing internal controls and improving processes & procedures.

Requirements:

  • Degree in Accounting
  • 3 to 6 years of Accounting experience
  • Hyperion, HFM, Great Plains expereince a huge plus
  • Excellent communication skills (both written and verbal)
