• Responsible for coordination of the Group’s annual budget process, quarterly forecasting and monthly updates.

International Tax Planning Director, Houston, Texas

 

Essential Functions

  • Responsible for international tax planning relating to tax matters associated with companies projects.
  • Responsible for special tax projects and other tax research and planning as it relates to mergers and acquisitions, greenfield development projects, establishment of new representative offices in foreign jurisdictions, identification of new, country-specific tax initiatives, and other strategic analysis and planning as required.
  • Responsible for the review and filing of tax returns for the holding and service companies.
  • Responsible for the analysis of current and proposed laws as they could potentially impact new and current businesses.
  • Responsible for the successful defense of positions and strategies from tax auditors in the jurisdictions in which Company affiliates operate.
  • Responsible for proactively generating new ideas and supporting due diligence and business development teams; working as member of multi-disciplinary teams on project development and implementation.
  • Responsible for assisting tax team with FAS 109 reporting, transfer pricing, or other departmental projects and initiatives, as needed.
  • Responsible for engaging and directing local country tax advisers as needed.
Essential Job Requirements

  • A minimum of 8-12 years of international tax experience in major aspects of U.S. international and foreign country corporate tax planning (preferably related to large capital investment projects), including legal entity and contract structuring.  CPA required.
  • Good organizational skills; ability to prioritize workload.
  • Strong analytical and technical tax skills and ability to understand tax law.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills are required.
  • International travel, as required.
Preferred Skills and Education

  • JD or MBA
  • Ability to speak Spanish, Portuguese, and/or Mandarin Chinese a plus.

Houston-area unemployment dips in April

The Houston-Sugar Land-Baytown metropolitan area gained 2,700 nonagricultural jobs in April to pull the unemployment rate down to 8.4 percent, the Texas Workforce Commission reported Friday.

Unemployment was down from 8.5 percent in March, but up from 6.7 percent in April 2009.

Job growth was boosted by 1,900 new hires in the leisure and hospitality sector, and 1,600 jobs in both the education and health services and government sectors. That growth was offset by the loss of 2,300 jobs in the trade, transportation and utilities sector.

The civilian labor force grew by 14,100 people between March and April, while the number of unemployed people fell by 1,100.

Statewide, the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate rose to 8.3 percent in April although Texas had a gain of 32,500 nonagricultural jobs during the month.

The state’s unemployment rate is up from 8.2 percent the month before, and from 6.8 percent in April 2009.

Texas’ job gains put the state fourth among the largest over-the-month increase in employment, according to the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Statistics. Ohio was first with 37,300 jobs, followed by Pennsylvania (34,000) and New York (32,700). Virginia (28,100) followed Texas.

Since the beginning of 2010, the Lone Star State has produced 79,000 jobs, TWC said. Overall, Texas has 11.2 million employed workers after the first five months of the new year.

The creation of new jobs should not be mistaken for an ease in finding work, TWC said.

“The Texas labor force is expanding at a record pace, and there is stiff competition for all these new jobs,” said TWC Commissioner Representing Labor Ronny Congleton.

The nation’s unemployment was 9.9 percent.

Responsibilities:
The Senior or Staff Internal Auditor is responsible for performing individual internal audit projects as part of the annual internal audit plan. This responsibility includes developing the audit scope, performing audit procedures, identifying issues, recommending solutions, and preparing reports reflecting the results of the work performed. Work performed will include functional and operating units, focusing on financial, IT and operational processes. The Senior or Staff Internal Auditor may direct and/or review the work performed by other internal audit personnel.

The Senior Internal Auditor will also assist Internal Audit management with periodic reporting to the Audit Committee, development of the annual internal audit plan, and championing internal control and corporate governance concepts throughout the business.   Additional responsibilities will be to support the company to ensure compliance with the Sarbanes-Oxley Act, and to observe periodic physical inventories at various manufacturing facilities.

Qualifications:
Required Qualifications:

  • Experience supporting management with the development and maintenance of key controls identified for Sarbanes-Oxley.
  • Understanding of internal control concepts and experience in applying them to plan,
  • Perform, manage and report on the evaluation of various business processes and controls.
  • Ability to work independently, with limited required direction and guidance, and provide appropriate direction to other internal audit project team members.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills for effective presentation to peers and management.
  • Exhibit the leadership skills needed to sell ideas and obtain management buy-in for constructive change.
  • Understanding of internal auditing standards, COSO and risk assessment practices.
  • Understanding of the technical aspects of accounting and financial reporting.
  • Experience in performing multiple projects and working with varying team members.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Undergraduate degree in Accounting or Finance
  • CPA designation or working towards
  • 2-4 years of public accounting and/or private industry experience with knowledge of accounting, finance and internal control areas
  • Prior industry experience is a plus.

Where do I start???? 2010 has been a very pleasant surprise. Honestly, I did not expect the market to shift so fast. We have had a tremendous amount of clients request Accountants on a permanent and temporary basis. Personally, as a Recruiter, I have had the best start I have every had in 9 years of recruiting!!!! Basically it boils down to companies starting to experience more demand and not having enough resources to get all the work done. Most accounting departments have been running very lean for the past 18 months or so. We are seeing positions at all levels from temporary AR/AR clerks, to Accounting Managers and Financial Analysts. The biggest demand to date has been in Tax (both public accounting and industry). I think we have finally put the worst of times behind us and can look forward to brighter days!

Tax Accountant – Oil & Gas, Houston, Texas

Must be able to independently prepare complex Excel spreadsheets, analyze source documents for book/tax differences, compute tax depletion and depreciation, maintain tax calendars, and maintain schedules of tangible property. Four to five years of related experience, preferably in public accounting, with demonstrated progression in complexity of tax engagements and demonstrated leadership abilities.

Tax Manager
The Tax Manager is a CPA with more than seven years of experience, including two years’ experience as a Tax Supervisor. The Manager has responsibility for management of multiple engagements and serves as the primary contact with the client.
The Tax Manager:
  • Supervises and verifies the technical research for multiple complete tax engagements
  • Serves as the primary contact with the client during the engagement; responsible for ensuring quality of work performed and satisfaction of client

Making a career change is one of the toughest job-search challenges. For clarification, “career change” means much more than “job change.” A career change means choosing a completely new profession or industry. A “job change” is simply changing employers within the same industry and profession.

The two main reasons people make a career change are:

1) The industry or occupation becomes obsolete
2) Job dissatisfaction.

What makes a career change so difficult? After all, most job seekers attempting a career change know exactly why they would do well in a new profession or industry. The problem comes down to communication. Most job seekers have difficulty communicating in their resume their ability to excel in a new career. Resumes, by definition, focus on career experience (history), but career changers need employers to see their expertise (current skills) in order to be viewed as a viable candidate.

If you are attempting a career change, it becomes easier when you understand the ABC’s of career change:

A: Assess
B: Bridge
C: Communicate

Assess what you want changed.

Before you can make a successful change, you must decide what needs changing. Is it the duties you perform? Your overbearing boss? Your current geographic location? The industry you work in? The size of company you work for? The level of responsibility you hold? Once you pinpoint your exact source of unhappiness, you’re on your way to making the correct choice for change.

Bridge the gap between what you’ve done and what you want to do.

The key to selling yourself based on your expertise rather than your experience is transferable skills. Transferable skills work like bridges to help you cross over from one industry to another or one occupation to another. Transferable skills are those skills you now possess that qualify you as a viable candidate for your career change.

Communicate your ability to excel in your new profession or industry.

Your resume is your front-line communication tool to prospective employers. No matter how well you interview, if your resume doesn’t sell you, there won’t be an opportunity to convince them in person. Use your accomplishments to prove the strength of your transferable skills, and you’ll get interviews faster and with more enthusiasm.

General Statement

Under the general direction of the Controller, the position is responsible for regulatory and managerial financial reporting and related activities.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the preparation, review and analysis of domestic and consolidated financial statements and managerial financial reports, including completion or management of underlying entries and computations needed to complete financial statements.
  • Assist in the design and creation of financial reports to help optimize Company operations.
