Creative Financial Staffing has been exclusively retained by an IT Service company to identify a VP of Finance to join their team.  Overseeing one staff member, the VP of Finance will have hands-on responsibility for the daily operations of the accounting/finance function while partnering with the CEO to drive the strategic financial growth of the company.

3. Opportunity:  As the company’s first financial executive, The VP of Finance will be charged with building out the accounting/finance infrastructure to support the run rate of the company.
4. The Exposure:  The VP of Finance will be expected to provide business and operational analysis, strategic insight, and tactical financial support to be an effective business partner and trusted advisor to the CEO and private equity partners.

The VP of Finance’s responsibilities include but are not limited to:

• Reporting to the CEO and overseeing 1 staff member, the VP of Finance will have responsibility for all aspects of the day-to-day financial management of the company including the preparation of the monthly financial package; management of GL accounts, annual audit and submission of government and related tax returns; and financial planning.
• Provide financial and operational metrics and analytics to executive management.
• Develop and implement business process improvement initiatives and strategies.
• Increase the company’s ability to anticipate business issues and drive good decision-making through sound financial management.
• Further develop guidelines and processes corresponding to the rapid growth of the company.
• Continually review accounting policies and procedures to ensure that the company is compliant with GAAP and statutory accounting
• Implement reliable forecasting tools (P&L, cash flow, and balance sheet).

Qualifications:

• Undergraduate degree in accounting or finance
• C.P.A., M.B.A. or master’s degree in finance is preferred, but not required.
• 10+ years of total experience.  Must have hands-on experience working in an accounting and financial management function in a high growth company.

• Experience in the service/project-based industry.
• Experience establishing and implementing process improvement initiatives within a high growth environment.

• Experience working for a Private Equity-Backed company as a Portfolio VP of Finance desired but not required

• Experience establishing and implementing process improvement initiatives within a high growth environment.
• Experience developing and implementing metrics/KPIs around the organization’s functions

Salary:

150 to 200K base, plus bonus

 My outlook for 2019 remains “cautiously” optimistic. Houston hiring cooled down a bit in the summer, and that is not unusual. Historically the Fall has always been my busiest time of year. Currently, even though the supply of top talent remains low hiring demand seems rather flat. I am still waiting for the fall hiring spike to occur.

Let’s walk through some statistics that could explain why:

• Three engines drive Houston’s growth: Oil & Gas, Foreign Trade and the U.S. Economy
• The world’s largest economies in order are: U.S., China, Japan & Germany (equals around 50%)
• Three hundred thirty thousand local jobs are tied to exports. Houston led the nation in exports (120B). Exports are slipping though.
• The US generated 130,000 jobs in August. It averaged 158,000 the rest of the year and over 200,000 in 2018.
•  U.S. GDP growth was at 2.0 in Q2. That is good, but not great!
• The oil & gas industry lost over 93,000 jobs during the fracking bust and less than half the jobs have been recovered.

Provide financial controller roles and responsibilities and compliance matters for the US-based team and portfolio company activities. Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer regarding all financial and accounting activities.

• Reconcile quarter and annual inter-company transactions between trading entities and other entities for Consolidation Reporting.
• Respond to SOX related inquiries from management and internal/external auditors on a quarterly and yearly basis.
• Provide assistance to management with drafting evaluation of SOX testing variances.
• Account for and analyze hedging fluctuations in relation to foreign exchange rates and effects in revaluation currency of the accounting system.

What the company needs in a Senior Trading Accountant:

• 4+ years of experience in Finance and/or Accounting in the Energy Commodity Marketing/Trading Industry
• Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Finance and/or Accounting.
• Strong knowledge of IFRS / US GAAP with Mark-to-Market accounting in the commodity trading business.
• Fundamental accounting skills required and strong computer skills essential -advanced Excel user.

What the Senior Accountant will do…

• Reconcile various general ledger accounts on a monthly basis
• Propose and create monthly accruals and other relevant journal entries
• Perform bank reconciliations
• Review, approve and post A/P entries
• Update balance sheet reconciliations: prior to recurring journals, after journals have been posted and once a month is close prior to final Trial Balance
• Enter reoccurring journal entries to book prepaid expenses/insurance, property taxes, bonus accruals, tax/audit expense accruals, inventory reserve
• Update commission reconciliation and accrual monthly
• Complete payroll review
• Reverse prior month expense accruals
• Review fixed asset accounts: add new additions to the schedule, calculate and book depreciation, update PP&E roll-forward
• A/R & A/P intercompany true-up reconciliation; record adjusting journal entries if needed
• Review credit card expense coding and record via journal entry
• Review Profit & Loss statement, prepare variance analysis explanation
• Prepare income tax accrual
• G & A expense allocation journal entries
• Upload trial balance to Hyperion

What the company needs in a Senior Accountant:

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance required
• 4+ years of progressive Accounting experience
• U.S. GAAP required
• Intermediate Microsoft Excel skills required Hyperion experience preferred, Oracle experience required
