July 2026 Economic & Hiring Update
The Houston job market is still in a good place, even though hiring has settled down from the rapid pace we’ve seen over the last few years. Companies are still adding talent, especially across healthcare, construction, professional services, and other industries benefiting from Houston’s continued population growth. Some organizations in energy and manufacturing have become more selective, but demand remains solid for experienced professionals and leadership talent.
One trend we’re seeing is that many professionals are choosing to stay put. Compensation growth has narrowed to the point where changing jobs often doesn’t provide a significant financial advantage. Annual raises are averaging around 4%, while job changes are generating increases closer to 6% on average.
What continues to stand out is Houston’s long-term momentum. The city now ties Chicago with 27 Fortune 500 headquarters, second only to New York, and continues to attract corporate relocations and business investment. Add in steady population growth and a business-friendly environment, and the fundamentals remain strong heading into 2027.
Bottom line: Hiring isn’t moving at the frenzied pace it was a few years ago, but companies are still hiring. They’re just being more intentional about it. At the same time, many candidates aren’t actively pursuing new opportunities because the financial upside often isn’t compelling enough. Together, those factors are creating a slower, more selective hiring market (and yes, this is my personal opinion).
