November Newsletter – You do not want to miss this one.

Here is your update for Houston:

Our unemployment rate is at 8.5% in Houston. Texas is at 8.1% and the Nation is at about 10.2% for October.  I know this does not sound good, but let me look for the positive here. I had the opportunity this week to attend the Houston Economic Symposium. The moderator every year is Dr. Barton Smith, University of Houston (Go Coogs!). He was able to shed a lot of light on the economic condition in Houston and I wanted to share that with you.

The Bad:

  • If we add 250,000 jobs per month it would take us 2.5 years to get back to where we were at the peak of our national economy
  • We have lost over 7,000,000 jobs in the U.S. since December of 2007 (the official start of the recession)

The Good:

  • We have cut the trade deficit in half (thanks to a weaker dollar our products are more attractive again)
  • Retail sales are stabilizing
  • New home sales will double in the next 5 to 6 years (great indicator of future jobs!!!)
  • Job losses in Houston are slowing and we are either at or very close to the bottom

The VERY GOOD:

  • Traditionally Houston is the last to enter a recession and the last to get out, BUT this time around we are the last to get in and will come out right around the same time as the National Economy (This is huge, since we generally lag about a year).
  • It looks like the worst is over from Houston (Purchasing Managers Index is right around 50)
  • The ONLY place we have to go it up. We will show a slight improvement in job growth in 2010. BUT – 2012, 2013 & 2014 will be great years for job change! There will be more jobs and not enough talent to fill them.

EVEN BETTER (Our CFS National Stats)

  • We have seen sales growth for the past 5 consecutive months
  • Our clients are calling us with needs again!!!!!!

So, whether you are looking or not, things are getting better. I think 2010 will be a much better year for all of us!!!!

Interview Preparation

The more prepared you are the more confident you will be.

  • Read the Interview Preparation Packet
  • Buy a Portfolio if you do not have one
  • Make copies of your resume
  • Make sure your suit is dry-cleaned and ready!!!!
  • Do your research! Go to the company website, Yahoo Finance, Hoovers and MSN Money. Look for goals and objectives, corporate culture and any new press releases. This information will be imperative for the interview.
  • Google the company name and the interviewer’s name.
  • Compare your resume to the job description. Think about accomplishments you can point out. Make sure you can explain all reasons for leaving. Make the responses short and to the point. Never, ever say anything negative about an employer in an interview. Believe it or not, it IS a very small world.
  • Prepare a list of at least 5 questions per interviewer and have them ready in your portfolio.
  • Make sure you have the directions.
  • Role-play with anyone!!! Interviewing is not your profession. You have to practice!!!! Practice the hard to answer questions. You never want to sound scripted or that you are fishing for an answer. If you do not know how to answer specific questions, ask your recruiter for advice!!!!

The Day of the Interview:

Don’t forget to smile and have a positive attitude. First impressions can make or break an interview!

  • Arrive Early (if you do not know the location drive by the night before)
  • Review your notes before you go in.
  • Give yourself a prep talk (you should be a little bit nervous, this is normal).
  • Walk in with confidence and tell the receptionist whom you are there to see.
  • Make sure you are looking for your interviewer. Do not sit and read. Sit with confidence and a smile on your face!!!!
  • Don’t forget a firm handshake. If you have a tendency to have sweaty palms, wash your hands with really cold water before you enter the reception area.
  •  If you have a problem with direct eye contact, look at their eyebrows. They will never know the difference.

The Interview:

Don’t worry if you have done your homework you are well on your way.

  • Rule number 1…People love to talk about themselves. Don’t forget to ask about the interviewer’s background and why they like working for their employer.
  • It is very important to establish rapport. Look for commonalities.
  • Ask to have a typical day described to you; ask about projects and how you can make an immediate impact. Remember: The employer is probably doing his job and the one you are interviewing for as well. The more you can help, the more likely they are to hire you.
  • Talk about your accomplishment and goals. Be prepared to talk about challenges and how you met them.
  • Always know the answer to strength and weakness question. Don’t forget about your 5-year goal.
  • Make sure you ask the questions you prepared. Don’t forget to include questions to better understand the job and what it would take to be successful.
  • Don’t ask about benefits or money. This is about the job and the company. Your recruiter can get you that information.
  • If the money question comes up tell them it is more about the opportunity and you are sure they would make you a fair and competitive offer. If they press you tell them what you are making. If they keep pushing you give them a range. Never, ever give them a number!!! And do not put a number on their application.
  • Don’t forget to ask a lot of questions and show enthusiasm. Most candidates are cut from the process simply because the manager does not think the candidate is interested.

The Close:

This is your chance to bring it all together.

  • Tell them you are interested.
  • Ask if there are any concerns about your ability to do the job. This is your last chance to sell yourself!!!!
  • Explain that after learning more about the company and the position you are even more excited about this opportunity. Review the experience you can contribute and ask for the job or the next step in the process.

The Follow up:

  • Call your recruiter immediately. It is essential that we speak to you before we speak to the client to gage your interest level.
  • Very few candidates actually write a thank you note. I recommend an email immediately after and a hand written note as well.

CAUTION: ONLY FOR THOSE WHO TAKE THEIR CAREERS SERIOUSLY!!!!

By Diane Delgado LeMaire, Accounting & Finance Recruiter, Creative Financial Staffing

I often wonder: Why do recruiters have a bad reputation? I mean, we help people find jobs and we do this for free until we actually successfully place someone. So, what is it? Are we bad people? Are we not upfront? Do we not communicate enough with our clients and candidates? Well, I must admit, it is true that our follow up with the candidates is probably not the best, but when you speak with OVER 30 people a day and get over 500 emails in a week…this can bit a bit challenging to say the least.

Honestly, I think the problem is bigger than that. We have a lot of people that come in and out of this business very quickly. I am not sure what the turnover ratio is for recruiters, but I am sure it is almost as high as collections or customer service employees! It is very hard to establish relationships with candidates and clients, when you do you do not put in the time to earn their business. I am sure it does not sit well with many candidates or clients to get a call from one Recruiter today only to find out that they are gone the next.

Turnover is definitely an issue, but I think there is more to it than that. It seems that most Recruiters look at this profession as a “job” and not a career. On one hand you have the people entering and exiting the business at rapid rates. On the other hand you have Recruiters that just go through the motions and make their calls to say they hit their daily quotas. In addition to this, there does not seem to be much thought process behind what it is they are trying to accomplish today, tomorrow and in the future. In a booming economy that may work, but in a recession it takes a little bit more time investment than just working the numbers. Every connect we make has to count for something.

So, what can we have to do as Recruiters to be viewed differently? Well to start with we need to become masters of our domain. That includes taking pride in what we do and who we represent (both candidate and client). It also means sometimes walking away from a deal that “just does not feel right” or is not in the best interest of all parties involved.

Here are some suggestions for those, who want to become an expert in this wonderful world called RECRUITING:

  • Look at every contact as a long term investment.
It does not matter if the person you are working with graduated college yesterday or if  they only have 5 years left in the workforce. Today’s candidate is tomorrows hiring manager. Today’s hiring manager is tomorrow’s candidate.
  • Educate yourself about your local business community.
If you are not reading your local business journal and newspaper business section you are doing yourself and your candidates / clients a disservice. You have to know what is going on in your local economy!
  • Constantly stay on top of new sales techniques
Start by subscribing to various newsletters online. We are all busy, but just pick one article per week. It will take 5 minutes of your time!
  • Become involved in your community.
Join the local Chamber of Commerce or volunteer for a cause that you are passionate about. Go out and meet the people! People do business with people they like and share commonalities with.
  • Read, read, and read!
Everyone should read Business Week, Fortune, The Economist or something along those lines. There are so many magazines that relate to your local and global economy – just pick one! At the very least check out www.money.cnn.com daily. You need to know the highlights of what is going on to speak intelligently with clients and candidates.
  • Finally, be courteous, genuine, honest and ethical.
It is very simple: Karma! What comes around goes around!

As Recruiters we need to take our “Career” and not our “Job” seriously. We want to be known as the experts and becoming the expert takes a little more effort than just showing up from 8 to 5 and going through the motions.

September Newsletter

Here is your update for Houston: Our unemployment rate is at 8.4% in Houston. Texas is at 7.4% and the Nation is at about 9.7% for August. The good news is that all indications are that we are coming out of this recession. The bad news is that employers are still very cautious about making a hiring decision.

We have seen a significant up kick in temporary and temporary to hire orders though. We are hitting record numbers for our Houston office in particular. It seems that a lot of decision makers are feeling less stressed to bring in interim help and this is a good time to alleviate all the extra workload most of us have taking on this year.

It is not uncommon right now to feel overworked and underappreciated. You may even be thinking of making a change, but are staying put until the economy improves. You are not alone. A lot of Accountants are apprehensive to go anywhere with the current state of the economy. BUT – don’t forget that a lot of managers have delayed hires for over 8 months now. All indications are that hiring for the last part of the year is going to pick up even more. Remember that as degreed Accountant you have less than a 1% unemployment rate. That means that 99% of Accountants are employed and the good ones are still hard to find and very sought after.

As always feel free to reach out to me with any questions, concerns or advice. I have been recruiting in Houston for 8 years now and love sharing my knowledge with others. My job is to help you accomplish your career goals. Some candidates are often surprised that I may tell them to stay put, because it does not make sense to make a move. I am here to help and guide you throughout your career. I look to foster long term relationships and hope that you will reach out to me when the time is right.

Monthly Newsletter July 2009

It is time for your Houston economic update tailored to you as the Accountant. Overall Houston is still doing better than the rest of the country. We have a 7.1% unemployment rate vs. a 9.4% nationwide. The hardest hit areas seem to be in manufacturing. Healthcare and education actually experienced job growth in May. It seems that homebuilding is starting to pick up and the price of oil is stabilizing around $70 a barrel.  The rig count is still down, but that will probably not last very long. There are a lot of equity companies out there buying up assets right now too (well, those who have the cash).

So, who is looking for Accountants? Personally I have seen a lot of positions in the non profit arena. Also, smaller companies that do not have the luxury of spreading their work out amongst 100’s of employees are still looking for talent.  In addition to that small to mid size CPA firms are always looking for great talent. In my opinion this means that things are getting better. Most of the companies I have worked with over the past 8 years have indicated to me that they have openings – they are just gun shy to hire with all the uncertainty out there. A lot of hiring managers have also indicated late Q3 and early Q4 hires. This year has definitely been an interesting one. From a business perspective I personally have tripled my sales from Q1 to Q2. This is all great news. I know everyone hopes to be out of this recession soon!!!!

I did not include an article this time. I feel as though I have shared enough information for the time being. As always feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns. I am your career counselor and lifetime agent. I am here for advice, even if you do not make a move.
