Sit with where you’re at (even if it sucks)

You don’t have to love your current job, but don’t skip the part where you figure out what it taught you. Research industry options and skill gaps like your future depends on it — because it does. That knowledge? That’s leverage.

Build a cushion, not a crash pad

Passion doesn’t pay the rent. Not at first. So if you’re gonna make a move, build your own parachute. Budget for it. Prepare to earn less for a bit. Don’t let money panic kill your dream before it even starts breathing. If you can, start working on your thing while you’re still employed. If you can’t, then build the cushion to give yourself time. Stay scrappy and flexible

No one’s path is straight. It won’t go how you pictured. That’s not failure — that’s just life being honest. Some days you’ll feel unstoppable. Some days you’ll feel like a fraud. Key Responsibilities of the Staff Accountant – Power Settlements Lead:

  • Lead power settlement processes (ERCOT/ISO): daily/weekly reconciliation, identify variances
  • Own month-end close, GL, and accounts payable; hands-on across all tasks
  • Document, refine, and cross-train settlement procedures; act as main process owner
  • Support dual-entity accounting (main OpCo + JV); coordinate with operations and finance
  • Help transition accounting in-house from an outsourced provider

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Power/energy accounting with ISO settlements (ERCOT or other ISO experience)
  • Full-cycle GL and AP; ERP system exposure (NetSuite or peer)
  • Proven ability to drive work independently in lean/startup settings

What you will do as the Cost Accountant

  • Validate and maintain standards for materials, labor, and overhead across all items
  • Perform month end cost close activities and prepare clear variance analysis with root causes and actions
  • Reconcile and improve the flow of purchase price and manufacturing variances so they land in the right place
  • Support annual standard updates and ensure underlying assumptions are correct
  • Monitor inventory valuation and provide insights that improve margin and pricing decisions

What you bring as the Cost Accountant

  • Three or more years in a manufacturing cost role
  • Solid knowledge of standard cost, variance analysis, and inventory accounting under GAAP
  • Advanced Excel and experience with an ERP in a manufacturing setting
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, supply chain, or related field
  • CPA or CMA is a plus
