Here is your update for Houston: Our unemployment rate is at 8.4% in Houston. Texas is at 7.4% and the Nation is at about 9.7% for August. The good news is that all indications are that we are coming out of this recession. The bad news is that employers are still very cautious about making a hiring decision.

We have seen a significant up kick in temporary and temporary to hire orders though. We are hitting record numbers for our Houston office in particular. It seems that a lot of decision makers are feeling less stressed to bring in interim help and this is a good time to alleviate all the extra workload most of us have taking on this year.

It is not uncommon right now to feel overworked and underappreciated. You may even be thinking of making a change, but are staying put until the economy improves. You are not alone. A lot of Accountants are apprehensive to go anywhere with the current state of the economy. BUT – don’t forget that a lot of managers have delayed hires for over 8 months now. All indications are that hiring for the last part of the year is going to pick up even more. Remember that as degreed Accountant you have less than a 1% unemployment rate. That means that 99% of Accountants are employed and the good ones are still hard to find and very sought after.
