It is time for your Houston economic update tailored to you as the Accountant. Overall Houston is still doing better than the rest of the country. We have a 7.1% unemployment rate vs. a 9.4% nationwide. The hardest hit areas seem to be in manufacturing. Healthcare and education actually experienced job growth in May. It seems that homebuilding is starting to pick up and the price of oil is stabilizing around $70 a barrel.  The rig count is still down, but that will probably not last very long. There are a lot of equity companies out there buying up assets right now too (well, those who have the cash).

So, who is looking for Accountants? Personally I have seen a lot of positions in the non profit arena. Also, smaller companies that do not have the luxury of spreading their work out amongst 100’s of employees are still looking for talent.  In addition to that small to mid size CPA firms are always looking for great talent. In my opinion this means that things are getting better. Most of the companies I have worked with over the past 8 years have indicated to me that they have openings – they are just gun shy to hire with all the uncertainty out there. A lot of hiring managers have also indicated late Q3 and early Q4 hires. This year has definitely been an interesting one. From a business perspective I personally have tripled my sales from Q1 to Q2. This is all great news. I know everyone hopes to be out of this recession soon!!!!
